LO concurs in the strong protest submitted by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) to the Turkish Government regarding the mass detention of 71 trade union activists in the last few days. Turkey has ratified all ILO core labour standards but in spite of this, the Turkish Government does not respect trade union rights. LO President Karl-Petter Thorwaldsson says in a comment that this is extremely scandalous and reprehensible. LO has repeatedly submitted protests to the Turkish Government when trade union rights have been violated. Furthermore Mr. Thorwaldsson says that a country which aspires to becoming a member state of the European Union cannot act in such a flagrant way. This is appallling, Mr. Thorwaldsson concludes.
