High opinions of regional safety delegates

Since the 1970s, inquiries have been made among the members of the LO national unions about their working environment and how the work for a better working environment proceeds. LO has now, with the assistance of Statistics Sweden, made a new review of the regional safety delegates’ experiences. The outcome is accounted for in the new report “The safety delegates’ work and experiences 2006”.

LO has, in cooperation with Statistics Sweden, inquired 730 regional safety delegates about their work and experiences and the conclusions are, above all, that the aims of the safety delegate’s work are fulfilled but the activities need to be further developed.

· 85 per cent of the employers appreciate the work of the regional safety delegates. Their knowledge is of importance to the employers’ possibilities of developing the working environment, preventing work injuries and thereby profiting from a satisfying working environment.
· The regional safety delegates absorb small enterprises with their working environment knowledge.
· The activities of regional safety delegates need more resources. In ten years, the number of small workplaces has increased from 180 000 to 270 000.
· New regional safety delegates must be recruited. Today, the average age is 51 years.
· The regional safety delegates want, in the first place, more training in psycho-social issues.

The knowledge of small enterprises as regards working environment is generally deficient. The regional safety delegates are often the only persons with whom the employers discuss working environment matters. Therefore the knowledge of the regional safety delegates is vital to the employers of small enterprises.

- The regional safety delegates make the employers and employees pay attention to the importance of working environment measures. The working environment is developed by the systematic co-operation between employers and regional safety delegates, Ulla Lindqvist, LO second Vice President, says.

The issues to be dealt with by the regional safety delegates become more complicated. Continuous training to increase the knowledge, among other things in psycho-social issues such as work organisation and the handling of conflicts, is needed to manage the tasks.

- The regional safety delegates’ achievements are of advantage to society by their making the working environment safer. More people can work and contribute to our joint welfare and production. It is logical that the Government should allot resources to the training of regional safety delegates. These resources have now been withdrawn by the non-Socialist Government, Ulla Lindqvist says.
